Mrs Bruins

Is there freedom of speech in the UK?
Mrs Bruins started off by asking us our opinions on Gay Rights, Immigration and Religion and demonstrated to us that we were able to express our opinions on such issues within the classroom. We are lucky in the United Kingdom to be able to speak freely about these issues and to discuss them constructively; other parts of the world do not have this right.

Does freedom of speech mean we can say exactly what we want, where we want, when we want?
Freedom of speech does not, however, mean we can say what we want, where we want and when we want. We much make sure that our opinions are informed and not used to hurt or degrade a person. Often people can be ignorant and we suppose the freedom comes from being able to educate ourselves about particular issues and discuss them in an informed way, not to cause offence to people.

What do the poster’s images tell us about this concept?
The birds are flying away from the person’s mind which illustrates that we, as human beings, have the right to freedom of speech. We have the right to learnt about social and political issues that affect our world and should use this knowledge to help people, rather than hinder them.

Miss Bedassie

Is there freedom of speech in the UK?
Yes, people are allowed to say what they like about this is within reason and some people in our tutor group disagree because you do get into trouble for saying things, especially racially or sexually biased things.

Does freedom of speech mean we can say exactly what we want, where we want, when we want?
As above, it does not mean we can say whatever we like.
What do the poster’s images tell us about this concept?
At the front of the head everything is compact like the person is trying to hold in their feelings. At the back of the head everything is free like the person is able to say what they are thinking. If a person’s opinion is offensive or controversial then the person saying it can get in a lot of trouble.
